Charlotte Area
The county, "offers far more than just the little things that make life pleasant. This neighborly county boasts some of the very best things too - like plentiful jobs, low crime and inexpensive living along placid Charlotte Harbor" reported the July 1997 Issue of Money. The serenity of Charlotte Harbor and its surrounding waterways seems to draw those in pursuit of healthy diversions. Clean air, 129 square miles of sparkling waters, clear sunshine, fishing at its greatest, wildlife in abundance and a casual, friendly atmosphere are appealing to those who are seeking the natural pleasures of life. Charlotte County is a veritable sports enthusiast's paradise. Whether you are a fisherman, baseball fan, golfer, hunter, boater or seeker of peace and tranquility, this gem of the southwest Florida coast can serve your needs with abundance.
An established, yet still growing area, Port Charlotte has the services and amenities necessary for the convenience and enjoyment of its residents and visitors. The Murdock area of northern Port Charlotte is a dynamic, growing shopping-business center. Shopping areas, office complexes, financial institutions, theatres, restaurants and motels have been built in recent years. A regional shopping mall opened in August 1989. Charlotte County Stadium, spring training home of the Texas Rangers and year-round baseball facility, is also located in the Murdock area. Recreational opportunities abound - golf courses, yacht clubs, tennis courts, parks, boating facilities, pool and beach swimming - and more. The unique Port Charlotte Cultural Center offers educational, recreational and cultural activities every day of the week, 52 weeks of the year. Port Charlotte has more than 165 miles of man-made waterways, many with access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. There are miles of natural shoreline bordering Charlotte Harbor and the Peace and Myakka Rivers.
Early Spanish attempts to colonize the outer islands were stopped by Calusa Indian tribes, and the area was slowly settled as the English migrated by Charlotte Harbor on to the banks of the Peace River. In 1885, Col. Isaac Trabue from Kentucky bought the land from British investors and founded the town of Trabue. The name was never well accepted, however, and reverted back to the Spanish version in 1887 upon incorporation. This town of 20,000 is in the midst of major community revitalization and beautification efforts. Wish historic preservation as a priority, Punta Gorda has secured State Historic District status. The city Streetscape program is restoring an old Florida atmosphere to central district streets by adding brick lanes, street lamps, benches, brick planters, flowers and shade trees. The residential areas feature many brick streets lines with huge old royal palms and many old Florida-ear tin-roofed homes with wide verandas. Punta Gorda is one of five locations to hold the Redfish National Cup held each year by ESPN2. This year's tournament will be aired on national television August 28, 2004. The world's largest tarpon fish tournament is also held here and at Boca Grande Pass in May and June of each year. With an every increasing population, unique shops and restaurants are being added throughout town, expanding the fine reputation of Punta Gorda Charm. |
